Historical Background of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences

The faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus came into existence on the 29th of October, 2015 following the University of Nigeria’s Governing Council’s approval for the creation of the faculty, out of the already existing Faculty of Medical Sciences. However, the faculty took off effectively on the 27th day of November, 2015 following the appointment of Professor P. O. J. Ogbunude as the pioneer Dean of the faculty, and Dr A.A. Eze as the Associate Dean.
The faculty is made up of three departments namely, Human Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry and Human Physiology. These departments offer four year first degree courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)degree in Physiology, Anatomy and Molecular Biology and Genetics (domiciled in Medical Biochemistry). All the departments offer post-graduate degree courses (M.Sc. and PhD).
The faculty has a staff strength of about fifty-three academic staff and fifty-six Nonacademic staff, while students’ enrollment as at 2017/2018 academic year is about four hundred and sixty-seven students.The present Dean of the faculty is Professor D. C. Nwachukwu while the Associate Dean is Dr. I. Ikele.

Justification for the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences
Arising from the need to expand the College of Medicine in line with global best practices and to develop manpower needs of the Basic Medical Sciences especially in research and teaching and also to give medical and dental students a sound background in the pre-clinical subjects, there has been a strong desire of the College to create a faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. Such faculty will provide opportunity for future growth of the College through the development of related professional courses and disciplines.



To reposition the Faculty to render excellent services in teaching and research in core areas of Basic medical Sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Biochemistry with greater emphasis on postgraduate training and research.
